American dog ticks, sometimes called wood ticks, are common throughout the U.S., though they are less prevalent in the Rocky Mountain area. These brown ticks, with grayish-white markings, can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when fully engorged. They have an oval, flattened body with larvae having six legs and adults having eight.
Although they prefer to feed on dogs, these ticks can also bite humans and are known to carry diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. They are most active during spring and early summer. Checking pets regularly and keeping yards maintained can help prevent infestations.
The reddish-brown Brown Dog Tick is frequently found on dogs and is prevalent in warm regions like California. While they prefer dogs, they can bite humans if no canine hosts are nearby.
As adults, these ticks are about 1/8″ in size, expanding to 1/2″ when engorged with blood. They possess six legs as larvae, and eight legs as nymphs and adults. Promptly removing ticks from pets is essential to avoid health concerns. Regularly check your pets and keep their environments clean to reduce infestations.
Pacific Coast ticks thrive in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, including areas in Rancho San Diego. They are most active in cooler months, especially during April and May. Adult ticks usually feed on large mammals like deer, cattle, and horses but will also bite humans and dogs.
These ticks can transmit diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis in livestock is another concern. Approximately 11% of adult ticks carry bacteria causing Pacific Coast tick fever, which may be mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Western Black-Legged Ticks are found along the Pacific Coast and in British Columbia, where they are the main carriers of Lyme disease. These ticks live in forests, grasslands, and areas close to water. They can also be found in scrubby landscapes. They are closely related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick but are primarily found on the West Coast.
Adults are active from early December through early summer, while nymphs peak in April, May, and June. Nymphs feed on small creatures like rodents and lizards but rarely bite humans or pets. Yard maintenance and keeping the area free of debris can reduce tick infestations.

Two weeks after the first tick treatment, we provide a free follow-up visit to check for any newly hatched ticks. Our technician will inspect the treated areas inside and outside to make sure all ticks have been eradicated.
